For the Toyota 4Runner safety ratings, we’ve taken data from the two most popular U.S. safety agencies: the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The NHTSA rates crashworthiness by running simulated collisions and accidents, and awarded the Toyota 4Runner an overall four stars out of five. For their individual tests, the NHTSA scored the 4Runner a four out of five for frontal crashworthiness and a perfect five stars for side crashworthiness.
The IIHS rates vehicle safety on a scale of four: Good, Acceptable, Marginal, and Poor. The 4Runner received top-level Good ratings in the following categories: head restraints and seats, roof strength, side airbag strength, and moderate overall front crashworthiness.
